Sales Sales for the year were on par over all for the past 5 years. With 2014 coming in at $158,303 and 2015 came in a little lower at $155,266. As you can see from 2014 to 2015 domestic sales increased $6,574 international sales decreased $9,611 in the same time period.
Gross Profit Gross profit followed a similar trend with 2015 coming in a little under 2014 at 54,246 and 57,629 respectively.
(Loss) income from continuing operations Here we see a large loss for 2015. We see a loss of $86,535, this is due sizable impairment of good will expense as well as large income tax expense. It was relatively difficult to get to the bottom of where all this came from. However, Black Diamond did complete the sale of POC (their high-tech protective gear business) in 2015 which would result in some abnormal expenses.
Net (loss) income When you combined the decrease in international sales with the large loss from continuing operations it is easy to see why Black Diamond had a hard 2015.
2015-2016
Year-end number have yet to be published so we will be comparing third quarter 2015 and third quarter 2016. Sales Total sales are slightly up from $39.4 Million vs $39.2 Million from 2015. This includes a small increase in domestic sales and yet another year with decreased international sales. Gross Profit Gross Margin down to 31.3% compared to 36.0% in 2015. This comes along with an increase in COGS from $71,711 to $75,155. (Loss) income from continuing operations We do see a Net Loss from continuing operations decrease to $0.4 million compared to $50.8 in 2015. Net (loss) income As would be expected from the above information we see a significant decrease in Net Loss for 2016. From a substantial loss in 2015 of (56,817) to only (7,589) in 2016. Take Away From the financial data taken from Black Diamond only it would appear that they are having a slight decrease in sales moving forward. This could be for a variety of reasons from down turns in international economies to devaluation of international currencies. As we look forward to 2017 it will be interesting to see how Black Diamond plans to increase their sales internationally which being sure to not neglect their domestic market. At the end of Quarter 3 domestic sales were higher than international sales which is abnormal for Black Diamond. It would be easy to look at this information at face value and say that Black Diamond is going downhill but I do not believe that is a fair assessment. Financial statements can tell us a lot of things but they are certainly not an all-encompassing picture of how a company is doing.
